​​Direct Part Marking (DPM) Codes ​

​​Direct part marking gives manufacturers permanent visibility for tracking and control without labels. By printing, etching, or embedding 2D data matrix or QR codes directly on parts, DPM ensures reliable identification, improves efficiency, and lets you keep more accurate records. This process simplifies part management, making it easier to track every component from production to end use.​

​​Permanent visibility for every component – with DPM 

​​Direct part marking provides a label-free way to identify and track manufactured parts. With DPM, a code is permanently marked on the part to:

  • ​Address safety concerns
  • ​Trace faulty parts after an accident to determine their origin and cause
  • Manage routine warranty or quality control issues

​It’s particularly valuable in automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries (such as for cell phone parts), ensuring reliable tracking throughout a part’s lifecycle. The preferred DPM codes are 2D Data Matrix and QR codes.​ 

​​Understanding DPM​

​​Specifications: Key features and benefits of DPM codes include:

  • ​Marking methods: Laser printing, dot peening, chemical etching, casting, engraving, or abrasive blasting.  
  • ​Code types: most frequently 2D Data Matrix or QR codes.
  • ​Surface considerations: Can be applied to flat, curved, or textured surfaces; reflective surfaces may require a small matte patch for better scanning.
  • ​Scanning requirements: Often requires advanced image-based readers due to low contrast and challenging surfaces.
  • Contrast and visibility: Printing on parts generally doesn't allow for the traditional black markings on white background, so DPMs tend to be low contrast no matter what method of printing is used. 

Advantages: DPM codes permanently mark parts for their entire lifecycle, ensuring reliable tracking for warranty, safety, and quality control. Condensed 2D codes allow placement on small parts, and the markings can withstand harsh manufacturing and operating environments. 

Disadvantages: DPM codes can be difficult to scan without advanced image-based readers due to low contrast. Surface curvature, reflectivity, and texture can impact readability, and specialized equipment may be required for marking. DPM codes cannot be easily reprinted or updated.   

Typical usage: Automotive components, aerospace parts, electronics and cell phone parts, industrial equipment and machinery.​
