​​2D matrix codes are compact, reliable, and packed with data

​​Two-dimensional matrix codes are a modern evolution of traditional barcodes. They’re commonly used for product tracking, inventory management, authentication, and linking to digital content – essential in industries like manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and retail.

​Unlike 1D codes, which encode data in a single line, 2D codes store information both horizontally and vertically, allowing them to hold much more data in the same amount of space. Each code is made up of a grid of modules – small, uniform squares – arranged in rows and columns. The total number of modules determines the code’s capacity, while individual module size affects readability. 2D codes remain scannable even if partially damaged or printed under poor conditions.

​These codes are read by area-imaging scanners, which capture the entire code at once, instead of one line at a time as with laser scanners. By decoding the pattern of modules, these scanners can reliably extract data from small, damaged, or high-speed codes, making 2D codes ideal for factory automation, mobile scanning, and traceability applications.​

​​What is a Data Matrix barcode?​

​​A Data Matrix is one of the most common 2D codes, capable of encoding very large amounts of data in a compact space. Data Matrix codes are made up of small black and white squares that form a big square or rectangle. They're used in a variety of industries, including aerospace, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, defense, mail, and printed media – and anywhere else where complicated operations need excellent tracking and traceability. That’s in part because they’re incredibly reliable: data matrix barcodes have an error rate of less than 1 in 10 million characters scanned.

Specifications: Data Matrix codes can hold up to 2,335 alphanumeric characters or 3,116 numerical characters. Each code includes a perimeter finder, a timing pattern, and a quiet zone. They can also encode symbols large and small.

Advantages: Data Matrix barcodes can read even when up to 30% damaged, due to built-in error correction. They can encode letters, numbers, and other ASCII characters. And they can be read with image-based barcode readers or mobile devices even with low resolution.

Disadvantages: Data Matrix codes can’t be read with traditional 1D barcode scanners. They also require a quiet zone of white space around the code to be read properly.

Components of Data Matrix codes:

  • Clocking pattern: provides a count of the number of rows and columns in the code
  • Cell or module: interior components of the code that make up the pattern
  • Data region: the actual encoded data. Redundant data is often included, so even if some cells are damaged, the code is still readable.
  • Finder or 'L' pattern: helps a barcode reader find and determine the orientation of the code
  • Quiet zone: the margin of white space around the entire code.
