2D matrix codes are compact, reliable, and packed with data
Two-dimensional matrix codes are a modern evolution of traditional barcodes. They’re commonly used for product tracking, inventory management, authentication, and linking to digital content – essential in industries like manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and retail.
Unlike 1D codes, which encode data in a single line, 2D codes store information both horizontally and vertically, allowing them to hold much more data in the same amount of space. Each code is made up of a grid of modules – small, uniform squares – arranged in rows and columns. The total number of modules determines the code’s capacity, while individual module size affects readability. 2D codes remain scannable even if partially damaged or printed under poor conditions.
These codes are read by area-imaging scanners, which capture the entire code at once, instead of one line at a time as with laser scanners. By decoding the pattern of modules, these scanners can reliably extract data from small, damaged, or high-speed codes, making 2D codes ideal for factory automation, mobile scanning, and traceability applications.
