​​QR codes unlock speed, data, and connectivity​

QR codes were originally developed to track automotive parts on assembly lines, but their adoption skyrocketed with the rise and ease of smartphone scanning. A 2D matrix code, they’re now everywhere – from product packaging to marketing campaigns – instantly connecting people to digital content.

Businesses can place QR codes on almost anything, printed or digital, and users simply scan to unlock information, discounts, or special offers. Their versatility makes them a go-to tool for advertisers, retailers, and brands.

QR codes also excel in industrial and logistics settings, tracking parts, inventory, and shipments with speed and accuracy. They also provide instant access to maintenance records, manuals, and service histories, helping businesses streamline operations and improve traceability.

​​Understanding QR codes​

​​​​Specifications: QR codes have several defining features:

  • ​Square overall, made up of contrasting colored cells in rows and columns
  • ​Variable appearance supports differently shaped cells and finders, many colors, and adding an image inside the code
  • ​Includes three finder patterns located in the top two corners and bottom-left corner
  • ​Can vary in size and complexity, storing small or large amounts of data

Advantages: QR codes scan quickly and hold far more data than traditional UPC barcodes. They can encode numeric, alphanumeric, binary, and even complex character sets such as Chinese logographs. Built-in error correction ensures readability even if part of the code is damaged. They’re also customizable to support corporate branding.

​Disadvantages: Higher error correction reduces overall storage capacity. QR codes can embed executable files, creating a small risk of security vulnerabilities if scanned from untrusted sources.
