Lighting Styles
Smart lighting
The Cognex Ecosystem Lighting (CEL) Series makes machine vision lighting work seamlessly by directly integrating with In-Sight vision systems for fast, simplified deployment. Connect In-Sight devices through the light port for plug-and-play setup with automatic discovery in In-Sight Vision Suite. Once connected, lighting parameters can be fully configured within the software, including the ability to overdrive illumination up to 3X standard intensity.
Standard lighting
Cognex ICEL Series lights are designed for challenging applications, where variable operating conditions and high-precision requirements demand reliable performance. These high-intensity lights feature modular windowing that enables fine-tuning of the illumination area and diffusion levels to optimize image quality. Models under 24W support plug-and-play integration with In-Sight vision systems through the light port for streamlined setup and control.
Lighting available in five different styles
Proper illumination eliminates glare, reduces shadows, and boosts contrast so vision systems can find edges, decode marks, and verify presence/absence with confidence – even on reflective metals, textured plastics, and low-contrast parts. Choose from back, bar, brick, coaxial, and ring machine vision lighting in a range of colors and sizes to solve your automation needs.
Back lights
Back lights are positioned behind a target and provide diffuse illumination that creates high-contrast silhouettes, highlighting an object’s shape or profile.
Common applications:
- Detecting features and voids
- Gauging based on silhouettes
- Verifying alignment
Bar lights
Bar lights provide uniform illumination along a straight axis, often narrow and elongated to cover rectangular areas, and can be directed at any angle for either direct brightfield or oblique darkfield lighting illumination.
Common applications:
- Inspecting narrow or parts
- Detecting edges and seams
- Inspecting components on glass substrates
- Detecting defects in interior surfaces
Brick lights
Brick lights provide diffuse, wide-area illumination that can be directed at any angle for direct brightfield lighting and feature IP67-rated housings to ensure reliable performance in harsh environments.
Common applications:
- Optical character recognition (OCR) and optical character verification (OCV)
- Inspecting large parts and uneven surfaces
- Running presence/absence checks
Coaxial lights
Coaxial lights provide highly uniform lighting, shining directly along the optical axis of a camera to reflect light onto the target without casting shadows. This is especially powerful when combined with Moritex MML series telecentric lenses and other lenses without built-in coaxial illumination.

Ring lights
Ring lights produce even illumination to minimize shadows and uniformly light non-reflective objects, and can be configured for dark-field, diffused, or bright-field lighting for consistent, uniform illumination.

- Inspecting cylindrical objects, holes, and threads

- Bright-field lighting: Shines direct or slightly-angled light onto the object under inspection, causing defects to appear dark against a bright surface.
- Dark-field lighting: Directs glancing light across the object, highlighting surface irregularities such as scratches or imperfections.
- Uniformity: Ring lighting excels in providing even lighting across a working surface, allowing for a better image and a more robust image inspection.
