Barcode Grading and Verification in Aerospace & Defense

There’s zero margin for error in aerospace and defense manufacturing. A single unreadable code on a turbine blade, a mission-critical electronic assembly, or a spare part for an active-duty aircraft can stall production lines, trigger costly audits, and compromise safety. Regulatory bodies, including the Department of Defense (DoD) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), mandate codes meet a specific verification grade.

Barcode verification is the process of grading barcode quality against standardized parameters to ensure they scan correctly across devices, facilities and processes. By identifying and resolving issues such as poor print quality or formatting errors early on, verification prevents disruptions and confirms that barcodes are universally scannable. 

Complying with MIL-STD 130

MIL-STD-130 is the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) standard for identification marking of military property. It mandates that items with an acquisition cost exceeding $5,000 be marked with a 2D Data Matrix symbol that achieves a minimum verification grade of "B" (based on ISO/IEC 15415 or AIM DPM quality parameters). This symbol encodes a Unique Item Identifier (IUID) containing a part number, serial number, and the contractor’s information.

The standard requires that barcodes must be verified using specific lighting configurations and maintain permanence throughout a part’s entire lifecycle.

The Challenges of Verifying DPMs

In aerospace and defense, components are often marked directly onto metal surfaces rather than on attached labels. Grading DPMs comes with unique challenges:

  • Low-contrast surfaces: Reflective surfaces create a lot of glare, minimizing contrast and making codes difficult to verify. Additionally, challenging surface finishes common in aerospace and defense parts can obscure codes.
  • Part geometry and code placement: Uneven and round parts can distort a code’s appearance and make it hard for a verifier to reach the code.
  • Marking variability: Dot peen marks consist of individual indentations whose size, spacing, and shape can vary significantly while other marking methods can create shallow DPMs. Embossed DPMs can present new challenges.
