Electrode Coating Inspection and Alignment

Inspecting electrode coating for misalignments, scratches, holes, and other defects is critical to EV battery safety. These flaws, left undetected, can degrade battery performance or even cause an electrical shortage or fire. The defect detection process relies on machine vision systems to find subtle defects in the slurry while it’s being applied and processed at high speeds, preserving quality, safety, and throughput.

The challenges of inspecting and aligning electrode coating

Wet coating, the standard electrode coating method in EV battery manufacturing, involves applying a slurry of carbon, graphite, binders, and other additives to an electrode surface. Flaws in the slurry, like bubbles, scratches, holes, or misalignments, can degrade battery performance and compromise safety. The thin, matte-black slurry is a low-contrast material that complicates defect detection, especially during high-speed production. As a result, traditional rule-based machine vision systems can’t reliably find flaws or recognize different defect variations.

Maximize EV battery safety and performance with AI-powered machine vision

Cognex vision systems use powerful imaging technology and optics to spot electrode coating defects, delivering fast, accurate inspections. Using AI technology to compare known “good” and “bad” images, Cognex solutions automate electrode coating defect detection, easily adapting to new types of flaws in complex settings. Even for low-contrast, matte-black targets, these solutions isolate subtle defects, reduce inspection time, and protect EV battery integrity and quality.

Comprehensive vision sees every angle, spots every defect

The Cognex Trevista CI Dome, a computational imaging solution, adds another layer of protection to your electrode coating line. Paired with Cognex software, it delivers faster, more accurate surface inspection by illuminating components from all angles to reveal subtle defects and topographical details. High-resolution images are captured quickly, while AI vision tools reliably distinguish cosmetic from critical flaws – even on shiny, matte, or textured surfaces.

This powerful solution streamlines inspection for reliable defect detection at full production speeds to:

  • Catch more flaws, in less time
  • Reduce inspection time, scrap, and costs
  • Maximize throughput with confidence

Identify coverage issues and other upstream production issues

Uneven coverage can expose conductive layers, risking damage to the electrode sheet, electrical shorts, or even fires. To prevent that, area-scan Cognex industrial cameras and VisionPro software measure the electrode, separator, and aluminum or copper coating, then analyzes the images to make sure it meets safety requirements. This eliminates the need for offline inspections, reveals errors earlier in production, and reduces changeover times
