​Interleaved 2 of 5 (ITF) barcodes are numeric codes commonly used by distributors, warehouses, and manufacturers to track cartons, crates, and other bulk items. They encode an even number of digits, with information represented in both bars and spaces. The name comes from the fact that exactly 2 out of every 5 bars are wide.

Unlike their predecessor, the Standard or Industrial 2 of 5 barcode, which encodes data only in the bars, ITF barcodes achieve higher-density encoding. They are often used to identify cartons or crates containing their own UPC barcodes.

​​Specifications: Interleaved 2 of 5 barcodes include the following key elements –

  • ​Start character – Marks the beginning of the barcode for the scanner.
  • Encoded data – Contains the numeric information, encoded in interleaving pairs of digits.
  • ​Check digit (optional) – Verifies accuracy of the code.
  • Stop character – Marks the end of the barcode.
  • Even-digit requirement – Each character encodes two digits; if the total number of digits is odd, a leading zero is added to the barcode.

Advantages: Interleaved 2 of 5 barcodes deliver more information than the standard 2 of 5 code by using both bars and spaces. They are also self-checking, so a check digit isn’t required – though one can be added for extra accuracy.

Disadvantages: While versatile, interleaved 2 of 5 barcodes encode only numbers, require an even number of digits (adding a leading zero if needed), can be longer than other numeric barcodes for the same data, and require moderate printing and scanning precision.
